Choosing a Betta

You've set up your tank, it's cycled, and heated to the perfect temperature.
You're ready to buy a fish!

This part fun and easy. It's as simple as picking out a fish you like!
If this is your first betta, I recommend following these tips to ensure you have a good experience.

Look for a Healthy Fish

A healthy fish is alert, with full fins and clear eyes.
He is able to swim smoothly and possibly has built a bubble nest.
He has no raised scales, missing scales, fuzz, or white specks (like salt) on his body.
He has no tumors or cysts.

Age

Generally the larger the fish, the older it is. Since bettas can live between 2-7 years, it's important to consider the age of the fish you want to purchase. Many pet stores do not know the age of the fish they are selling, but a breeder will.

Sex

Both male and female bettas can be equally colorful and full of personality.
Males tend to have longer, more impressive finnage.
If you get a male betta, you must remember he cannot be housed with other bettas.
If you get a female betta, and are looking to start a sorority, you must get at least 5 of them and have around 5 gallons per fish. Learn more about sororities here.

Tail Type

Understand the tail type of the fish you are purchasing.
For example; If you purchase a halfmoon, and a month later his tail looks similar to a crown tail, that is a sign of fin-nipping or fin rot.
Females tend to have similar looking, short tails for all tail types (with the exception of crown tail.)
Do not confuse a short-tailed (plakat) male for a female! Learn more about tail types here.

Color

This is purely a personal choice.
One of the best part about bettas is that they can be nearly any color~!
Often bettas in pet stores will be dull, this is due to stress. Once you take them home and acclimate them to a warm, big tank, they will brighten up.
Just be sure to make note of any changes to his color.
A marble may change color throughout their lives.
If the fish suddenly becomes red around the gills, or very pale, that could be a sign your fish is sick or stressed.
